Mission Trip-St. John's Lutheran Church
The southern part of the U.S. has been hit hard by the hurricane season. Group WorkCamps has secured some work sites in Spring, TX (just north of Houston) and the surrounding areas. You can be part of bringing help and hope to those who have been affected. Anyone currently in 8th grade and up including adults are invited to consider going on the next mission trip to Spring, TX July 8-14, 2018. Spread the word! Invite your friends to come with you.
When the Group Workcamp Developer returned from Texas he shared a bit of his experience while there, check out the story below:
The old man's son was stammering, groping for words. "This means so much...I can't tell you...can't find the right words..."
He looked down, and began to cry softly. He handed me his phone, with a photo of his house he had taken a few days earlier. Only the peak of the roof showed above the water. The old man was silent, but his eyes were active. Watching a group of energetic young people inside the house. Tearing out soggy, ruined drywall and adding it to the huge pile outside, along the street. Like the pile in front of every other house, up and down the street, and on the next street, and the street after that. Furniture, toys, bedding, clothes, appliances, cherished photos—the bits and pieces of lifetimes, now lost, gone forever.
In the yards, among the piles, the people who once called the houses home. Faces blank with the shock of having lost everything. Poking around the piles. Looking for what, I wondered—hope?
The old man turned and fixed his eyes with mine. "You tell everyone you know," he said, "how grateful we are for your help. You tell them!" It was hot, and I felt a bead of sweat run down my back. I looked back at the old man. "I will," I said.
With the scale of destruction and damage, there is still so much to be done. You can be a large part of Houston's road to recovery by signing up for the 2018 Mission Trip, registration form is here. Complete the form and return it to Pastor Rebekah by October 20.
